Course Summary
St Andrews, a par 72 Championship Golf Course, was designed by renowned British Architect Commander John Dering Harris in conjunction with 5 time Open Champion Peter Thomson and US architect Mike Wolveridge.
Construction began in the early 1970’s under the direction of associate American architects Ron Fream and Terry Storm. Our esteemed St Andrews Member Peter Hale also worked closely with the construction team during the project and was instrumental in routing some of the hole on the outward nine.
The front nine combines moderate elevation changes with fairways that meanders around stately old trees, many of which pre-date the golf course. Although the dramatically contoured greens are challenging, scoring opportunities can be exploited from the two par 5s. Conversely, the long 7th hole par 3, and 9th hole par 4 will require your undivided attention if you wish to avoid the Bogey Man.
The back nine has no shortage of adventure as it winds its way up a picturesque valley that is dissected by the Maraval river. This watercourse features on most of the holes and can cause some trepidation for those who have difficulty hitting it straight off the tee. On a dry and windy day, the back nine will test your patience and resolve, especially if you have treacherous downhill putts to contend with.
At 6809 yards from the back tees, St Andrews is not a long course by modern standards, but accurate shots are required off the tee and on your approach to the greens. If you miss your shot in the wrong place, up and down becomes a difficult challenge. Sound course management is therefore imperative if you intend to score well here. Overall, the course is fair and will engage golfers at all levels.
As the traditional host of the four-day Trinidad & Tobago Open Amateur Championship, St Andrews Golf Course produces drama and excitement like no other golfing event in the Caribbean. The last 6 holes are all game changers, concluding at the diabolical dog leg right 18th hole, where the leaders must negotiate a nerve-wracking finish amidst a large gallery of inebriated spectators seated in the club house overlooking the 18th green. Spills and thrills are the order of the day!
On non-tournament days, golfers can enjoy a more tranquil experience. The setting here provides golfers with beautiful vistas of the surrounding natural rain forest which is home to a wide variety of wildlife. In fact, each hole on the course is named after one of the many species of birds that reside here. If you have a keen eye, perhaps you can spot them when next you tee it up here at St Andrews.
