In 1956 the first unofficial inter island golf tournament was played on the Constant Spring Golf Course in Jamaica, when Murray Wilson and John Sellier first thought of the idea of a match between Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. This tournament was played between 2 teams of 6 players each representing the Trinidad & Tobago Golf Association and the Jamaica Golf Association. The format was 54 holes of Match Play with 18 holes of Four-ball, Foursomes and Singles. Walking in the gallery during the tournament was an English Doctor resident in Jamaica, Dr. Erik Hoerman, who envisioned an annual tournament with all the islands of the Caribbean being represented. This idea gave birth to the Hoerman Caribbean Cup which officially started in 1957 between Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica and was played at St. Andrew's Golf Club in Trinidad. The silver challenge trophy was donated by Doctor Hoerman.
In 1964 Puerto Rico joined the competition which required that the format be changed from Match Play to
|
Stroke Play with each team counting the best four scores of the six each day for the 72 hole competition.
The Bahamas then joined the competition in 1965, the Dominican Republic in 1968 ar Barbados in 1970. The OECS came on board in 1986 and the Cayman Islands in 1994. The Turks & Caicos Islands debuted at the CAGC 1996 and US Virgin Islands in 1998.
Through the years the Hoerman Cup has expanded into what we know today as the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships. 1969 Senior Men Golfers (50 years and over) competed for a cup donated by Dr. Jan Steele-Perkins and Mr. Francis of the Bahamas.
This ultimately led to two additional divisions the competition added in 1990 to allow golfers ages 60 and above (Super Seniors) and women to compete. The Super Seniors compete for the Higgs and Higgs Cup donated by Mr. Fred Higgs

of the Bahamas and Mr. Vic Higgs of Jamaica, while the women play for the George Teale Memorial Cup. Mr. George Teale was from Puerto Rico. The Most recent addition is the introduction of a mid-amateur category for Men between the ages of 35 and 50 which has been named for Ramon Baez Figueroa from the Dominican Republic.
The Hoerman Cup remains the signature event within the Caribbean Championships. This division is where the great Caribbean golf tradition started and the players which represent their respective countries are the best in the region. However to the benefit of golf across the Caribbean the Championships have expanded in their scope and other dimensions have gradually grown in prominence. In particular the introduction of the Arthur Ziadie Trophy for the overall winners is a wonderful incentive for rewards depth in a team and therefore encourages a quest for higher standards throughout.

Exciting finish at the Coca cola Club Championships |
Our Annual 36 Hole Coca Cola Club Championships were held on May 20 & 21 under beautiful sunny skies and in what has become par for the course there were playoffs in the Men’s 1st and 2nd Flight which made for a nail biting finish.
With a gallery watching Patrick Boocock and Derek Gonsalves, who were tied for the lead in the Championship flight at one under par made their way back to the 18th tee. Boocock, who had an outstanding year finishing in the top 5 of all 36 hole strokeplay tournaments this year, was no stranger to playoffs. Off the tee neither golfer had good drives but on the 3rd shot Gonsalves was on the green and Boocock hit his left of the green giving Gonsalves the advantage. Gonsalves 2 putted for the trophy and title of 2006 Men’s Club Champion.
There was a surprise finish in the Men’s 2nd Flight when Steve Mackay and junior Jordan Stephens, who held 10th and 12th place at the start of the day, emerged from behind in a tie for 1st place. Both players who had completed their rounds at least 3 hours earlier were requested to proceed to the 18th tee for a playoff. |
Deryck Gonsalves is all smiles as he is presented the Club Champion Challenge Trophy by Camille Chatoor,
Sales & Marketing Director of Coca Cola

Ladies Club Champion Angela Hodgkinson, Camille Chatoor and Bernard Pantin

Stephens who was on the green for three sank a long putt for par and Mackay who was there for 2 miscalculated and conceded the hole much to the amazement of the watching gallery who enjoyed ribbing him at the prize giving. A very happy Robert Terry won the Men’s 3rd Flight after holding the lead both days of the championship. Jerome Ali was 2nd in this division.
Strong competition in the Ladies 1st Flight between Tracey Clarke, Martine de Gannes, Victoria Seenath, Monifa Sealy and Anneke Ward showed the strength of ladies golf in Trinidad and Tobago. Only 1 shot separated each of the top five players in this division. Clarke, who is the most seasoned of the group, emerged to take the trophy and the title in this very tight finish. In the 2nd Flight Ladies Division Angela Hodgkinson easily took 1st place with an 8 shot lead over Kitty Murphy in 2nd place. Aleema Jack came 1st in the 3rd Flight.
Camille Chatoor who is one of our more recent members and is Sales and Marketing Director of Coca Cola, was on hand to present the prizes in what was a most enjoyable tournament.

The mood of the day was festive with the main sponsor Digicell was on site giving out gift bags and a Hawaiian Tropic booth with sunscreen for participants.
After the tournament participating teams were treated to some hearty fare whilst the scores were tallied with the successful golfers being congratulated by His Excellency the President and Stephen Brewer, CEO of Digicell, who presented the top prizes. Re-opening of the 15th Green
After four months of playing on a temporary green, our newly reconstructed 15th Green was opened for play Tuesday May 30th. The 115 yard par 3 hole presents a unique test to our golfers. The architectural design was handled by P. B. Dye while his Florida based golf company P. B. Dye Inc. handled the supervision and technical expertise through professional shaper Mike Davis who was ably assisted by Vedath Singh, our Course Superintendent, and his crew. The project involved a full reconstruction package including collars and greenside bunkers utilizing the latest technology and highest quality material, Bermuda Tifdwarf grass and Guyana sand.
The new 15th green is in superb condition and although it is the shortest hole of our Championship course, it presents an additional test, with a redsigned deep bunker at the front. In celebration of the commissioning of the green the club hosted a happy hour for our members when the President thanked the members for their patience during the renovation.
