HAT TRICK FOR CARLOS 'SEXY' BAYNES
AT THE SAGICOR ST. ANDREW'S INVITATIONAL

Defending champion Carlos “Sexy” Baynes showed fine form during the Sagicor St. Andrew’s Invitational returning with a level par after two days.  With lightning fast greens, Baynes shot 33 day one and 32 day two on the front 9 setting the pace for good scores.  National golfer Nazeem Haniff who led on the 1st day with a level par 72 dropped into 2nd place with a 76 on the second.  Patrick Boocock had his 3rd top 5 finish for the year with a 3rd Place in the Sagicor.

In another close race the Men’s 1st Flight winner was a very happy Nicholas Mouttet who arrived the day before from Miami with junior Mikail Roberts from Tobago in 2nd.  Edmund Fernandes followed closely in 3rd.
National Golfers Ray Roberts and Teddy Grell were 1st and 2nd in the Seniors division. Tyrone Leong was one stroke behind Grell in third place.

Royal Ashburn Golf Club, formerly known as Thunderbird Golf Club, was established in Toronto, Canada in 1961 by a man who developed a great friendship with St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Wilson Patterson.  Wilson first began coming to Trinidad in 1969 when his friend Colin Stewart was the captain of the club, Dick Taitt was the Club Secretary and George Brothers Philip was the hot player.  Wilson invited Brothers to come to Canada at the time and for a summer he played golf, studied and worked in the Pro Shop.
In the early days Wilson brought groups of golfers who stayed at the Hilton during 7 day tours.  These groups played golf matches with the members and among themselves.

Wilson also brought various professionals to play in the Trinidad and Tobago Open.  During these years Peter Hale began visiting the Thunderbird Golf Club every year to see the new and used equipment on the golf course. Wilson was happy to advise him on their methods and Peter saw opportunities to update our equipment here at St. Andrew’s.

As this relationship developed the idea of twinning the two clubs took root and a letter of agreement, which still hangs in the clubhouse, was signed.

In 2000 Thunderbird was renamed “Royal Ashburn Golf Club” given the location of the course in the historic Hamlet of Ashburn.  The twinning offers members of either club automatic membership at the other club and many members from St. Andrew’s have played at Royal Ashburn as a member.

If you are ever going to be in Canada and would like to play at Royal Ashburn just call us in the office and we will contact Wilson.

The address of the Royal Ashburn is:

The new members elected to the Board were Amoy Chang Fong, Treasurer; Bernard Pantin, Captain; Gary Voss and John de Gannes, Board Members.  Stepping down after years of service were Carl Chatoor, Rasheed Ali and Jean de Meillac.

The President thanked outgoing Treasurer Carl Chatoor, Captain, Jean De Meillac and Board Members, Rasheed Ali and Roger Rodriguez for their dedicated service.

The 2006/7 Board of Management is as follows:

R. Boyer Jaggassar
President
Jerome Borde
Vice President
Amoy Chang Fong
Treasurer
Bernard Pantin
Captain
Edward Grell
Green Chairman
Nigel Aqui
House Chairman
Gary Voss
Board Member
John de Gannes
Board Member
Rikhi Permanand  Board Member

There was unanimous approval of the following amendments to the Rules:

  • Throughout the Rules the Board of Management now replaces the Committee and General Manager/Secretary replaces Secretary.
  • Members who have reached their 80th birthday and who have been members for 25 years or more shall now be automatically “fully paid up members”.
  • The Disciplinary Committee has now been formalized.
  • Members whose annual subscription is in arrears for three months shall be liable, by resolution of the board of management, to have his or her name removed from the roll of members.

The 2006 budget was presented by our Finance Manager, Fijona Jaggernath, who projected a healthy year end surplus.  Also outlined was the Capital Budget with priority being given to the replacement of a tractor, as well as the construction of a fertilizer store room and an oil and fuels store room which are needed to bring the club within the compliancy requirements of OSHA.

General Manager’s Presentation on capital projects
Members were brought up to date on three projects undertaken since the Mid Year General Meeting in September.

  1. The renovation of the downstairs bar within budget and on schedule
  2. The completion of Phase 1 of the Course Renovation Project

Details were given regarding the construction of the 15th green and the practice putting green as well as an explanation of the process used to renovate the 14th green.  The final total cost of works done on the 14th, 15th and practice putting green were presented and it was explained that the project has been financed by Moka Valley Limited.

The plans for Phase 2 were outlined:

  1. renovation of remainder 16 greens
  2. renovation of bunkers
  3. installation of a new irrigation system

It is projected that Phase 2 will start on February 12, 2006 and be completed by May 31 and that all 18 greens would be back in play by July 1. It was also explained that the irrigation component was the most significant part and that costs in this regard were in the process of being determined.  The assurance was given that a Special General Meeting would be called later in the year to present final costs and plans to the membership.

The renovation of the practice putting green has been part of the overall drive of the Board of Management to improve our club’s facilities and quality of service.  For some time now there have been concerns expressed across our membership about the inadequacy of our practice facilities as a whole and the addition of a chipping area.  At the Mid Year General Meeting in September last year the President spoke of plans to expand the putting green and to provide the juniors with their own facility.

With all the sand needed in stock and just two additional weeks for Mike Davis an opportunity presented itself to create a practice chipping green, a bunker and to expand the putting green at a very reasonable cost.  This was done and the newly expanded putting green is growing in at this time.

R&A REVISES 2006 AMATEUR STATUS RULES

The R&A, golf's world governing body has revised the Rules of Amateur Status that provide amateur golfers with the opportunity to receive payment for giving golf instruction and reduce the waiting time of those who have breached the Rules, but who wish to return to amateur status. The changes to the Rules and their interpretations came into effect from 1 January 2006.

A new Instruction Rule provides that an amateur golfer may be paid for coaching golf for the first time as part of an “approved programme”.  Under the new Rules on reinstatement, the time amateur golfers in breach of the Rules have to wait before they regain their amateur status is reduced. The new guideline of 1-2 years brings these waiting periods in line with those for professional golfers returning to the amateur game. These are the principal changes to The R&A's Rules of Amateur Status which, together with the Amateur Status Decisions book, have been significantly redrafted after a comprehensive, two-year review. The R&A's affiliated unions from around the world have played a full part in the review and The R&A has liaised closely with the United States Golf Association throughout. The USGA's decision to make equivalent changes to its Amateur Code and to allow amateur golfers in the United States to receive expenses in individual competitions (which has been allowed under The R&A's Rules for many years) means that the respective Amateur Codes of The R&A and USGA are more closely aligned than ever before.

The two Codes diverge on only one matter – hole-in-one prizes. In the new R&A Code, acceptance of an excessive prize remains a breach of the Rules but carries a much reduced period awaiting reinstatement. The new USGA Code will allow amateur golfers to accept hole-in-one prizes of any value.

Commenting on the new Rules, David Rickman, The R&A's Director of Rules and Equipment Standards said: “I believe that the new Instruction Rule will greatly assist the worldwide development of the game by bringing coaching to remote areas where professional tuition is often not available. The R&A and USGA have made excellent progress towards a single Code for amateur golfers throughout the world.”

Stephen Ames Cup
One of the ways that Stephen Ames is making a contribution to golf development in Trinidad and Tobago is through the establishment of the Stephen Ames Foundation and the inauguration of the Stephen Ames Cup which was held in Canada in July last year.

This is a Ryder Cup style format with juniors from Trinidad and Tobago competing against juniors from Canada.  This year we will be hosting this tournament at St. Andrew’s from Wednesday July 26 to Friday July 28.  Each country will be represented by six boys and four girls. This event promises to be something special with Stephen confirming that he will fly home immediately following the completion of the British Open to be here for the week of the tournament.

Ben Martin makes history in the 99th T&T Open

Amoy and Ben
Amoy Van Lowa, HR Officer of bmobile
presents Ben Martin with the trophy

History was created on March 12th, when 15-year-old Ben Martin became the youngest player to win the Trinidad and Tobago Open Golf Championships at St.Andrew’s.

In doing so, Ben has surpassed the feats of Stephen Ames in 1981 and Damien Hale (1998) who both put their hands on the trophy at age 17, in establishing the previous record.

Showing composure that belied his age, Ben played the final back nine with tremendous steadiness leaving himself a tap in par on the final hole to defeat James Johnson of Barbados by one shot. Johnson had shared the day one lead with Scott Stollmeyer, but relinquished it with a second day 76. On that second day, Martin shot the best round of the tournament – 68 to tie the half-way lead with Stollmeyer.

But by the end of Day 3, Stollmeyer had fallen back with a disastrous 80, while Martin also slipped, conceding a two-stroke lead to Johnson. It took a fighting 72 on the last day from Ben to climb back into the top spot.

The winning total was 289, 3 shots better than 2005 when Martin finished fifth.

Patrick Boocock shot a sparkling final day 69 to finish third on 293, one stroke ahead of Stollmeyer, who bounced back well on the final day with 73.

Former champion Carlos Sexy Baynes was fifth on 296, with Simon Merry 7th on 298.
Merry had a first day 82, which put paid to his chances.

Teddy Grell was back in winners row among the Seniors, two shots ahead of Louis De Meillac, with defending champion Arjoon Samlal in third.

Also returning to winners row was Robert Grell who beat out defending champion Pat Suraj by one stroke in an exciting finish among the Super Seniors. Asraph Ali finished a further six strokes back in third spot.

The First Flight was won by Kerville Cowie of Tobago, who had a see-saw battle with Jamsheed Ali on all four days before coming out a 4-stroke winner.

The 2006 Open welcomed bmobile as the title sponsor for the first time, with lots of innovative, great prizes and a lovely closing function at the St.Andrew’s poolside.

2007 promises to be bigger and better as the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association marks the 100th Anniversary of the first T&T Open played in 1907.

Once again, St.Andrew’s members provided great support as volunteers in making the tournament a success, while thanks to the Course Superintendent and his crew the course was in great condition.
