The Cotton Tree Foundation Charity Tournament - "$250,000 not out"

The "golf gods" certainly shone on the Cotton Tree Foundation's Charity Tournament held on April 21 which raised an astounding $250,000 in support of the foundations work.

In addition, it was a day of brilliant sunshine in a week of incessant rain! But more importantly, it evoked camaraderie, team spirit, and satisfaction to have contributed to a worthy cause. Winning the two ball-better ball tournament was the team of England opening batsman Marcus Trescothick and businessman Annan Rajpaulsingh who were sponsored by Music Radio 97, who narrowly edged out on a countback legendary cricketer Sir Vivian Richards and our own General Manager Maria Nunes who were sponsored by Eastern Credit Union.

The tournament was not only supported by the business community but also by some of the most famous West Indian Cricketers. Apart from the Master Blaster, Sir Viv, there was also World Record Holder, Brian Lara, Desmond Haynes and Ian Bishop. In addition even though he didn't play Deryck Murray lent his support by attending the prize giving. The tournament was also supported by English Captain Michael Vaughn and a number of the English Cricket Team as well as quite a few of the international media who all teed it up.

The presence of all these celebrities certainly made the tournament a truly special event. Founded in 1993, the Cotton Tree Foundation was planted from an idea conceived by a small group of friends. Its mission is to continuously look at improving the life chances of members of the community of St Ann's and its environs. At the golf tournament, Patron of the Foundation, President of Trinidad and Tobago George Maxwell Richards noted that the Cotton Tree Foundation was one with a difference since it has no endowment or large trust fund to implement its programmes. He also pointed out that the Foundation does not "dole out charity" but "encourages active participation by beneficiaries." This tournament exceeded all expectations and plans are already afoot for the next tournament, which is scheduled for next year, when the Indian cricket team visits the Caribbean.

NOTES FROM THE CAPTAIN

ENTRY IN TOURNAMENT... FEES COMMITTED !

The Management Committee continues to try to provide the highest quality service to all our members. As we continue to have more Members, our golf course is more crowded, and there is a greater demand to play in Tournaments as well as on free days. We wish to take this opportunity to remind you that when you enter a Tournament, you book a space that possibly someone else could use if you did not play.

We know that sometimes a member books to play and has to cancel for various reasons, and that's fair, BUT you must call and cancel your spot. We ask that you do so at least 3 (Three) hours before tee time so that there is time to adjust the draw, replace you or others as necessary. If you do not call, you are liable for the entry fee. Yes, the full fee! You will be sent an Invoice which is payable in the Pro Shop before you pay to play in your next Tournament. We have all the systems - the phone number is 629 2314 or 629 0066, talk to the starter, or to Rosemarie, or to an official, they will take your message. Let's try to make it easy on OUR club and show consideration for our fellow members and make St Andrews Club the best organized club and the fun place to play golf in T+T. Golf is supposed to be FUN enjoy, and let others enjoy too!!

How to proceed when playing the 12th Hole

There continues to be some uncertainty re: the dropping on the 12th hole when playing from the Men's and Ladies Tees. Let us try to clarify some items:

The rules of golf cover all these situations on your options, however:

1) The area Between the Tees and the hazard is ROUGH. (You know the rule)

2) If you drive directly into the hazard, you drop at point of entry (you can come back as you far as you like)

3) Between the hazard and the road to the estate is GUR. There is a drop Zone provided near the main bridge.

4) There is also some GUR to the left after the estate road (from by the big tree), from here you drop at your nearest relief. (Probably to the right on the course)

5) BUT PLEASE NOTE. If you Pull or hook your ball from the Tee left into the hazard short of the crossing hazard, or over the hazard and WASA shed into the hazard, you Must drop at point of entry, and NOT over the hazard in the GUR, then take relief and so on. You should call on your marker to assist to identify where the ball last crossed the hazard, and decide accordingly. We hope soon to plant up this whole area which will make this all easier, in the meantime please play golf as per the rules.
