bpTT Week of Golf
19-23 January 2004

bpTT’s Paul Prince stood and broadly smiled as he told all the players and sponsors present at tournament prize giving that the 2004 Week of Golf had exceeded expectations all around. More money had been raised than ever before. This was because there were more teams than ever before. 46 to be exact. More teams of course meant more pros. And this year it wasn't’t just more pros, it was the best field of pros to date thanks to the efforts of Bruce Davidson: the Defending Champion-Dam ian Hale, The British Club Professional Champion-Gordon Law, the US Club Professional Champion-Bob Boyd, the Leading Money Winner on the Tight Lies Tour-Jaxson Brigman.

Our Captain, Jean de Meillac, chaired the Tournament Organizing Committee, which comprised Paul Prince, Michelle Dasent, Jon Perry, Mark Bradshaw, Russell Stephens, Nandini Narine, Leisa Perry and Natalie Suite from bpTT, and Angela Hodgkinson, Carolyn Maingot, Roger Henderson, Rosemarie Torry, Gregory Knaggs, Sharon Arneaud and Maria Nunes from St. Andrew’s. The Week of Golf this year was all about raising as much money as possible to fight AIDS in Trinidad and Tobago and the support from the sponsors was nothing short of outstanding.

The Junior Pro Am got the week underway on Monday. 58 juniors signed up and the opportunity to play with the pros is, as always, not to be missed. Smiling faces all day long made it clear that a good time was had by all. Coming away in top position was the team representing the Gulf Group of Companies-Pro Rene Rangel and juniors Jonathan Low & Sirron Melville.

The junior day ended with a bang as all were treated to an outstanding Clinic & Exhibition sponsored by Delta Secor, Secor Marine and Hilton Caribbean K.I.D.S. Bruce Davidson was the MC and exhibits by the participating professionals were well appreciated. Thanks to Murray Urquhart, Tom Sutter, Tim Thelen, Ross Drummond, Scott Henderson, Gordon Sherry, Fraser Mann, Damian Hale, Boy Boyd and of course, Bruce himself. Demonstrations of ball flight using basketballs, tennis balls and footballs made a great impact on the audience. On the lighter side, Murry Urquhart had the crowd in stitches with his imitation of some well known golf personalities while Gordon Sherry stole the show with his impression of Colin Montgomerie.

Our Members Pro Am was oversubscribed and closed long in advance. It was a great day of golf on Tuesday with 96 Members and 32 Pros competing in teams of 4. Bruce Davidson, Michael Scott, Orman Mendes & Hamish Herrera had a fantastic day in the drizzle and emerged winners with their score of 18 under par. As has become customary there was BBQ around the pool with Pecos getting many compliments for his fare.

The Texas Scramble came off very successfully on Wednesday due in no small part to some real team work from our staff.

There were 2 shotguns - 92 golfers in the morning and the same in the afternoon and both got off on time which was a real logistical triumph that we were able to repeat on Thursday and Friday as well. American professional Jaxon Brigman led his Paramount Transport and Trading Co. Ltd team of Asgar Ali, Ramesh Rampersad and Martin Haynes to victory.

After a full day of golf attention shifted on Wednesday evening to the Gala Dinner which was hosted at our Poolside. bpTT Chairman, Robert Riley, made a very moving speech on behalf of supporting the fight against AIDS followed up by leading comedians Glen Davis and Errol Fabien who got those gathered to dip in to their pockets to make the auction a success. Among the items auctioned were two full memberships donated by our club. Thursday dawned and the Pro Am began. The Course Superintendent and his team were out in the cold rain at 4 am setting the pins and the extraordinary lengths undertaken by them did not go unnoticed. Breakfast upstairs was a treat with omelets prepared to order by a smiling Pecos receiving the nod. The ladies section handled the registration with the efficiency that we have become so used to and marshalls organized once again by Peter Hale were well appreciated. At the end of the first day’s play the team representing Total Convenience Management of Pro Anthony Gill, Seamus Clarke, Lisa Niles and Barry Eligon set the pace with an outstanding 17 under. This was tough to repeat on the second and final day and in the end they settled for second place behind the overall winners who played for Tucker/Weatherford led by Scottish professional Gordon Law and his team of Grant Nesbitt, Jon Perry & Rick Graham who came from 5 strokes back to win with 21 under par.

Coming away with individual honours among the pros was Jaxon Brigman whose scores of 69/69 made him champion by just one stroke. He added a special touch in his acceptance speech when he thanked his caddy Roger Wilson for helping him to achieve his win. Bob Boyd came in second with 71/68 while Tim Weinhart was third with 71/69.

From all angles it was a great week of golf in support of a most worthy cause and everyone is already looking forward to next year. Special thanks to bpTT, all the sponsors, the professionals, the participating amateurs, the volunteers, our staff and of course to the organizing committee who put a great deal of effort into make the week a resounding success.
